About Ronald Reagan:
Ronald Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois on February 6, 1911. As a child he was given a nickname by his father "Dutch" because he resembled a
fat little Dutchman. He and his family moved a lot but finally settled down in Dixon, Illinois when Ronald was in high school. He participated in many school
functions such as plays, sports, student council president, and in the summer he served as a lifeguard. Once he graduated high school he enrolled in
Eureka College where he majored in sociology and economics. After he graduated in 1932 he served has a sports announcer in Iowa. Five years later Ronald
signed a 7 year contract with Warner Brothers. Over the course of 30 years he was in more than 50 films and served as president of the Screen Actor's Guild.
In 1940 he married an actress named Jane Wyman. Together they had a daughter and adopted a son. They were divorced in 1948. While in the Army during
World War II he was discharged from combat duty because of poor eyesight. He stayed in the Army making training films. He met an actress named Nancy
Davis while working as the president of Screen Actors Guild. She was mistakenly listed as a communist sympathizer and sought out help from Reagan. They
both were attracted to one another but Ronald Reagan was hesitant to marry again after suffering a painful divorce from Jane. Not long after, he recognized
that Nancy was different and was sweet and the couple married in 1952. Reagan became a host of The General Electric Theater. One of his jobs as host was to
tour the Untied States as a public relations representative. This intrigued him about political things and he shifted his views from liberal to conservative.
Reagan started his political career in 1964. In 1966 Reagan won the California governorship defeating Edmund "Pat" Brown Sr. After his first term of
governorship he was re-elected for a second term in 1970. After he served as governor of California Reagan announced his candidacy for president in 1980.
With more than 50% of the popular vote he defeated Republican Jimmy Carter. At the age of 69, Reagan became the oldest person granted presidency.
On January 20, 1981 he gave his inaugural speech and he stressed that "government is not the solution to our problems; government is the problem." In 1981
President Reagan was exiting a Washington Hotel where he was shot in the chest by John Hinckley Jr. He was quickly pushed into his limousine and rushed to
the hospital. Doctors found that the bullet pierced one of his lungs and just barely missed his heart. After a couple weeks he was back to work.
As President he faced many foreign affairs mainly the Cold War. In 1984 he was reelected defeating Democratic Walter Mondale. After serving his second term
he and his wife left the White House in January of 1989 and returned to his house in California. While in California the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and
Museum opened in Simi Valley in 1991. In November of 1994 Reagan released a letter to the public stating that he was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's
disease and in 2004 he died in his Los Angeles home at the age of 93. After a funeral was held in Washington D.C he was buried at his Library in California.
